"Jupiter Mars: Son of the Revolution"
Saturday, October 22, 10:30 A.M.
Center Cemetery, Norfolk CT
The Connecticut Society of the Sons of the Revolution will hold a ceremony at the Center Cemetery in Norfolk to honor Jupiter Mars as a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Mars served under his owner, General Van Rensselaer, for our nation's independence. With the encouragement of Senator Joseph Lieberman and Maurice Barboza, a citizen-funded memorial will be erected next to the National Mall in tribute to over 10,000 patriots of color that served this country during its fight for independence. Jupiter Mars was the father of James Mars, who is also buried in Center Cemetery, and his grave marker is part of the African-American Freedom Trail in Connecticut.
For more information about James Mars, please see the pamphlet for sale on our merchandise page, The Life of James Mars.

"A Walk Around the Village Green"
Sunday, October 2, 2:00 P.M.
Meet at the Museum.
Enjoy a stroll around the Norfolk Village Green and learn about its history. The Village Green became the centerpiece of the town through the patronage of one extraordinary family in the late 19th century. Descended from the town’s first pastor, four generations of the clan "Robbins, Battell, Eldridge, and Stoeckel" surrounded the Green with architectural gems designed by talented architects for the use of the community. This informative walk will take you through the evolution of the Village Green, from 1801 when merchant Joseph Battell purchased part of the "meetinghouse Green" as a site for his elegant residence, "Whitehouse", to the late 19th century when his children and grandchildren built the Norfolk Library and Battell Chapel. Highlights of the tour include the Tiffany stained glass windows in the Chapel and the Stanford White and Augustus Saint-Gaudens fountain on the Green.
